"From the heart of the Great Star Above, a young spirit warrior emerged from the invisible side of the world. Alone, but not afraid..."
This open page is an introduction to the series and the main character Long Stalk's origin and path that lead him to the East End Park neighborhood of Vancouver. This open page will change in consecutive books and become the open page from which Long Stalk will talk to the young listener and reader, and share his wisdom. There are Four Rounds of 13 books each in the series. Books 2-12 will showcase new main characters; with the 1st and 13th book in each Round returning to showcase Long Stalk as the main character in the story.
"When Long Stalk woke up, he realized..."
The Story begins... and the journey of Long Stalk's awakening starts when he emerges as a small shoot from the earth in East End Park.
As the foundation story, How Long Stalk Became a Flower, is written to draw the youngest children into the storybook experience. As the series progresses, each story grows in complexity and content.
There are Four Rounds of 13 books each. The Four Rounds represent the Four Ancient Purification Migration Rounds the Indigenous People made upon Turtle Island and Mother Earth. These ancient migrations are recorded by the Original People of Turtle Island, Australia and the Ancient Scottish people now called the Picts. These migrations were recorded on rock to mark the First Purification Migration after the first catastrophe on our Earth.
The 13 books in each Round represent the Medicine Wheel with it's 12 rock placements that make the circle; and the 13th stone, representing the child, placed at the center of the sacred circle.
"When I was a child, I understood there was war..."
This open page becomes the bridge to the second part of the interactive storybook. The section will showcase mini stories from my childhood and the wisdom my life experiences have brought me to help empower children to believe in wonder; understand the challenging aspects of life; be a source of healing; and to lead the young listeners and readers onto the next section of the storybook. Each consecutive book will showcase another animal/insect character who leads the children on through the storybook.
Rainbow Snake, also known as Teardrop represents the creative power to weave goodness back into the world. She is showcased in a future story where her metal is tested and she must find a way to bring her little sister Snowdrop, safely back home. When she accomplishes the mission set before her by her Grandfather Sundrop, she receives her rainbow colors.
Rainbow Snake is also a sacred archetypal creative power of the Original People of Australia.
"Rainbow Questions"
This open page with 8 questions and answers presents the Original People's knowledge and history. The first set of 8 questions for 'How Long Stalk Became a Flower' builds the foundation of the series influence and setting. These first 8 questions also explain the role of the 4 silent characters not included in the written story. Each book will present 8 questions and answers, the purpose of only presenting 8 questions is founded in the sacred number 8, that represents not only infinity, but the sacred balance between the materialistic and spiritual world. Within the symmetry of the number 8 is the symbol of cosmic balance and stability. Each consecutive book will include Silent Characters to help build the understanding of Spirt, Truth, Love and Peace as foundations and what it means to be a Whirling Rainbow Warrior and Dreamer for Peace.
Mother Earth's Rainbow Warrior's Pledge and 'Draw your portrait' circle...
This open page was created for children to become a part of the interactive series experience and the Hopi Dream of Peace. Each consecutive book will adapt to the new story's writing challenge and message, for example in Sometimes it Takes a Circle the Rainbow Warriors will become Rainbow Dreamers. the writing challenge will be to begin their pledge with "I believe..."
Teachers can photocopy or download from the website the Rainbow Warrior's Pledge sheet and the Circle within the Rainbow sheet for students to write their own spirit pledges and draw their own self-portraits.
This begins the 96 spots for children and youth of all ages to join the book series. There will be 52 books in the completed series. Children not in the series can have their self-portraits and pledges uploaded onto my website by sending me their scanned self-portraits and pledges via kelevillage@gmail.com
Check out Rainbow Warriors United in the 'MORE' section on this website to see the friends Self-Portraits and Pledges already uploaded from the 'How Long Stalk Became a Flower' storybook.
I will try to love Bear forever...
This final open page is dedicated to Bear and my personal bio. In each consecutive book it will vary somewhat to update my growing journey of finding my Indigenous Nehiyawak ancestry, and any corrections I will need to make in that regard. One of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves is to not be afraid to change or correct the knowledge we gain, the understanding we receive, and the wisdom we attain from our never-ending journey upon our sacred Mother Earth. My greatest challenge in this earth walk is to Love those who I love unconditionally, whether our paths diverge; for love is a never-ending spiral wheel, and we are not always traveling at the same speed. Ꚛ
Let the dream of peace circle every child and the love invoked strengthen their hearts...
As long as I can remember, I have dreamed of Peace for every child on our Sacred Mother Earth. And while my dream may seem impossible to many, every dream has the power to become real and true.
All children dream to be loved and to love. It is a part of our true nature. Bear aka Kerry is the one I want to love forever... and in our journey together I have learned to love someone, is to love them for who they are in their own time and space. Love is the most powerful force and transformer in the Waterverse of Creation. Love is freedom.
So let every child become who they have dreamed themselves to be. If we raise all children in love, we will not be afraid of who they become. Let children grow in places that nurture the creative as they learn to look after each other and Mother Earth. Help children to understand our responsibility to be the caretakers of the earth and to honor all life including our Grandma Moon. This I believe, is the foundation needed to restore peace to our realities.
We must all protect children from war, poverty and abuse. This includes every aspect of their development. Therefore, we must heal our own child's journey to understand the spiritual boundaries every child needs to grow strong, healthy, beautiful, safe, and respected.
May all our Ancestors of the good mind guide us to Peace and Understanding.

Ꚛ The Interactive Storytelling Experience:
Pre-Introduction (approx. 20 min) Children remove their shoes and put on slippers of various rainbow colors. They crawl through a cedar tree tunnel into the story-time space. They choose a regalia cape and head band, gather a rock cushion to sit on throughout the story-time. They find a place to sit on the blankets.
Children sit on five distinct blankets decorated with symbols of a Turtle, the Four Directions Circle, the Planet Earth;, one with four children (representing the Four Colors of the Four Tribe Nations of the World), and one blanket with a Tree, Rock and Sparrow Hawk (the sparrow hawk represents Kele Village; Kele is the Hopi name for 'sparrow hawk).
Introduction (approx. 20 min) I introduce myself in the matrilineal way and describe through a short color book, how I came to write a story about a Spirit Warrior, who became a Sunflower Seed and then found his way to the East End of Vancouver. I will show pictures of the Grand Canyon region, the place of the Hopi People's Emergence and the home of the Havasupai People. The Hopi people live in the region of the Four Corners. With permission, I will present a traditional smudge (sage/sweetgrass/cedar burned in an abalone shell) in recognition of the seven sacred directions. And offer tobacco to our Ancestors and the ground we are all sitting on.
The Story (approx. 20 min) I introduce the Long Stalk character as a Spirit Rainbow Warrior. A Rainbow Warrior is someone who believes in Peace. A Rainbow Warrior follows the Path of Heart. The Path of Heart begins when we believe in ourselves and our Dreams. A Rainbow Warrior walking the Path of Heart never engages in war, hate, or destruction. A rainbow Warrior dedicates themselves to the protection of all children from harm and corruption.
The Story will engage children as they listen to the narrative and are included in the
storyline when Moon and the Great Spirit Guardian of the Rainbow Flower Kingdom call the children to Mother’s Garden and ask them if they will Long Stalk's friend. The children call back “Yes,” becoming a part of the story when they agree to be Long Stalk’s friend.
Between the Story and Sharing Circle: this is a good place to take a break. Children can take a 15-30 min recess or lunch break to allow them to stretch their legs, go to the bathroom, and return to play in the Storytelling world.
Playing in the Storytelling World (approx. 30 min.) gives children the magical playtime to discover and experience the World of Long Stalk and his friends. Crawl through the tunnel, take animal characters from the Christmas tree props etc. The children can choose a cuddly stuffed animal to hold during the Sharing and Talking Circle.
The Sharing/Talking Circle (approx. 1 hour) Everyone will gather and sit in a circle. The Sharing/Talking Circle is an Interactive Show and Tell experience. Children will get to hold the various indigenous artifacts and show and tell items. The purpose of the Sharing and Talking Circle is to introduce Indigenous culture and art; to empower children to understand all life, nature, people, animals, even rocks, have their own special story, their own unique quality and history. The first item I introduce is the Talking Stick and the purpose of the Talking Stick, is to teach us the respect of listening as we take turns to talk without interruption. I keep the Talking Stick with me as I present the collection of Indigenous artifacts. After the Show and Tell, I reintroduce the Talking Stick. There is a challenge given here to have the children see and feel first.
The Talking Stick welcomes children to ask questions, share their own personal story and feelings, or pass the stick. The Talking Stick teaches the art of patience, listening, waiting for your turn, and respect. I will help the children to understand that both speaking and being silent are qualities our Indigenous cultures embrace; that to share our stories are gifts of knowledge and understanding we give to each other; but also, to be silent allows us to observe and learn from our hearts. Thereby, children will be empowered to share a story and feel welcomed to speak, or feel good about their decision to be silent. I will then pass the talking stick to the circle of children. One by one the Talking Stick is passed from each child to the next around the circle.
The Closing Circle (approx. 10 min) The children, teacher or teachers and I gather in a circle. I complete the storytelling experience by letting the children know they each have a special gift to share with the World; that they are a part of the 'Whirling Rainbow Dream of Peace for Turtle Island and the World; and that as adults, it is our responsibility to help them all grow strong and beautiful just the way they already are; knowing we all belong and are one family upon our sacred Mother Earth. Then to remember…
Dreams have the Power to change the negative into the positive. (sad into happy).
Dreams build imagination and creativity.
Through dreams and imagination, we discover who we are and want to be
Dreams come true when we believe in ourselves and each other.
The Give-Away (set-up 5 min) The Give-Away custom of all Indigenous Traditions of Turtle Island expresses a foundation that ensures survival. ‘To give and to share’ sustains all life. The Give-Away friendship gift will have 4 baskets set up that will hold light and dark blue glass beads and hemp string in various rainbow colors. Each Child will receive a friendship bracelet and packet of sunflower seeds. The children will choose a light and dark blue glass bead, and light and dark blue hemp cord to create a friendship bracelet to represent the Rainbow Tribe of Friendship. The blue beads and hemp cord are connected to the archetypal character Father Sky making the raindrops light blue and dark blue and cherishing all girls and boys
The Blue Glass beads represent the light and dark blue raindrops of Father Sky and the equality of all children of the Four Tribe Colors of the World. The blue glass beads were also a favorite trading item of the Indigenous people, of which they traded their goods for the blue glass beads with Russian traders starting around 1700s and from the times of first contact. Blue Russian Beads likely originated in Czechoslovakia. The history of glass beads reaches as far back as 40,000 years and it is this history I will focus on with the children. (See downloads to print The History on Trade Beads by O. Ned Eddins.)
The Sunflower Seeds represent the power of the Sun and Life in "How Long Stalk Became a Flower' story. The Children will also receive a little bundle of sunflower seeds to give away to the Earth, Wind, Water, Animals or try to grow into a sunflower for themselves, depending on the time of year the Storytime presentation occurs. This small token of friendship is meant to connect myself, the children, the teachers and parents into the Circle of Peace and Friendship and the world of Long Stalk.
The Picture with Long Stalk completes the Interactive Storytelling Experience. With permission the children and class can have their picture taken with a 6 Foot tall Long Stalk on canvas. One Long Stalk will be painted in Day colors, the second in Night colors.
